Brief description
Portrait of Philena Albee Adams, age 42. The subject is posed standing as no chair is in evidence. Philena is a mature and matronly figure wearing a black dress with full puffed sleeves, a pleated bodice and a wide waistband. She wears a double lace-edged collar and a modest string of gold or brass beads. Her ruffle-edged cap is tied with a large white ribbon at her chin. In her right hand she holds knitting needles and a ball of yarn. Her brown hair is parted in the middle and pulled back beneath the bonnet. Her pursed mouth and nose are small while her piercing green eyes are set within deep shadowed pouches giving her an altogether cartoonlike visage. An inscription, painted in block letters to her left, reads: "P.Adams/Born March 29, 1795 AE.42". The background is a neutral olive.
The frame is modern, black with a gold simulated liner.
