Brief description
Portrait of Luthera Ann Adams wearing a white dress with puffed sleeves and a wide red sash; seated in a yellow decorated step-down Windsor chair. She holds a red book in her left hand and wears a string of brass beads looped twice around her neck and from which is suspended a red and gold heart-shaped locket or pendant. Her dark brown hair is parted in the middle and drawn back rather severely and secured with a double black band or ribbon. She is also wearing in her hair a jewelled barrett. She has gray eyes, a straight nose, and a small cupid's bow mouth. Shading suggests unflattering pouches beneath her eyes. An inscription at her left, painted in block letters, reads: "L.A. Adams/Born May 4, 1825, AE." Age date is not completed and may be either hidden by frame rabbett or lost in process of re-lining canvas. The background is a neutral olive. The frame is modern, black with a gold simulated liner.
