Brief description

A canvaswork purse or pocketbook with crewel embroidery in a conventionalized floral motif. The tulips and carnations are shades of red, pink, purple, blue, green, and yellow on a dark mustard ground that once was green. The embroidery is worked mostly in a flat outline with long-and-short fishbone stitches. Worked into the face is the date "1762", the initials "B.S.", and the words "Set the seal upon my heart/Ecclesia, John XI." The purse is an envelope style with two pockets.
