Crewel-embroidered pocket

Name

Crewel-embroidered pocket

Brief description

A woman's pocket embroidered in crewel stitches. The fabric at the bottom front is a cotton and linen weave, which has been embroidered. The top and back fabrics of the pocket are linen. It has 3/16" wide blue and white woven tape ties and a center opening. The irregular placement of embroidery on both sides of the opening indicates that the embroidery is a remnant remade into a pocket. It is embroidered in shades of red, rose, wine, yellow, tan, green, beige, lavender and blue. Motifs include artichokes, roses, carnations, and foliage embroidered in French knots, Roumanian stitch and outline stitch. There is evidence of re-embroidery.
